Adrienne Rich's "Rape" Have you ever been in a situation where you had something horrible happen in your life that you needed to do something about, but in order to do something about it, you had to confront the problem and that caused you pain and more troubles? I believe that to be the underlying conflict in Adrienne Rich's "Rape". The main character who the speaker is talking to first is a woman who has been sexually violated. She is a victim of a heinous and very private, embarrassing crime. The officer that she has reported her situation to is a policeman who patrols her area and who her family knows and trust. Her family is very close to this officer, for "he comes from your block, grew up with your brothers.(2)" She doesn't know him that well though, which makes her telling him about the incident that much more painful and uncomfortable. She gives him all the details of the crime and about her assailant. She has the idea that the cop may have been her rapist. The woman has a certain bit of suspicion about the officer, but she is not sure. "Rape" is a poem about a woman who is reporting a case of rape to a policeman who may just be the criminal responsible for the offense himself. The violated woman isn't convinced that the policeman is the rapist, but the speaker defiantly suspects him. The rape victim knows very little about the criminal in question, so the speaker tells the reader about the incident, the evidence, and about enough facts to let them come up with there own suspect. The first statement made by the speaker is "There is a cop who is both prowler and father.(1)" When he says "prowler" the reader automatically considers the officer to be a suspect, even before any background is given on him. This is a very important line in the poem. It expresses that the policeman is both a prowler and a father figure. He is suppose to be an ally against crime and problems on his beat. The role of a policeman is to protect the innocent from criminals and evils. But who protects you when officers of the law are corrupt and are involved in unlawful actions? There is also another line in this paragraph that the reader could interpret to be incriminating. The speaker says the "You hardly know him in his boots and silver badge, on horseback, one hand touching his gun.(4-5)" Since she doesn't know him that well anyway, maybe instead of seeing him as an officer of the law, she sees him as her assailant. The middle few stanza get a little more confusing. The second stanza tells of how intimidating and powerful the policeman is. The third stanza is where the woman takes her problems and concerns to the officer. The forth stanza is quite intriguing. It starts off with a description the cop's eyes, a very soothing image. Its the last verse of this stanza that takes a turn of suspicion against the officer. The thought of the "the hysteria in your voice pleases him best(20)" makes the reader believe that he is the rapist, a person who would enjoy such a thing. The last stanza contains some good closing thoughts. It is also interesting because it sounds like the speaker changes who he is addressing. This is obvious in the first line of this stanza when the speaker says "He has access to the machinery that could get you put away.(26)" The woman wouldn't get put away, for she hasn't done anything wrong. The speaker is now talking to the rapist. The speaker later talks about what the rapist says as being "like a portrait of your confessor.(29)" In these latter moments of this poem, maybe the woman is unsure of who violated her. "Rape", by Adrienne Rich, is a poem about a woman who was violated. At first the reader suspects the policeman as her rapist, then it seems like she suspects someone else. After writing this paper, I come up with another possible theory. I believe that no one she knows is her rapist, she just sees all males as possible rapist and feels scared and threatened by them.

Below Angels, the King was positioned above all other human beings. Because of this the King was given the title Gods Deputy On Earth. During the Jacobean period there was also a strong belief in witchcraft; this being present in the play greatly intrigued the audience. Act 1 scene 4 and act 5 scene 3 both show examples of Kingship. The Kingship shown in these two scenes are very different. In order to understand these differences we must focus on the way in which the scenes are staged and the audiences opinions generated by the script. Duncan is a very well respected and admired King. The people of Scotland admire and bow down to him, as they believe he is a good ruler. Duncan praises and rewards those who do well to him. He congratulates Macbeth in winning the battle against Norway and promotes him to Thane of Cawdor. Its ironic how Duncans two most trusted companions betray him. Macbeth had gained the title Thane of Cawdor off the previous traitor that turned against Duncan and fought for Norway. Duncan truly believes in loyalty and trust. This implies that Duncan is an extremely confident man. When he walks into a room, he knows people are watching him and this does not bother him. Macbeth rules very differently to Duncan. After killing Duncan, Macbeth begins to fear that this could easily happen to him. Macbeth does not praise those who do well, but punishes those who do bad or even nothing. If he feels they may be a threat to him he will immediately take action and eliminate them. Macbeth has no loyal friends, simply scared servants that do what they are commanded, fearing for their lives. The first scene shows Duncan as King surrounded by his loyal company, whereas the second scene shows Macbeth as King without the company of anyone except his servants which are treated with very little respect. In both of these acts the Kings are displayed in the same room of the castle. In act 1 scene 1, Duncan is informed about the death of Thane of Cawdor who is found to be a traitor and sentenced to death. The atmosphere presented is shameful but Duncan knows that the decision he made was right. In act 5 scene 3 Macbeth hears that the English army is heading for the castle. He also finds out the unstable condition of his wife. He jokes to the doctor and asks what the condition of the country is. The doctor replies very honestly saying that he would want to be as far away from Dunsinane as possible. In this scene Macbeth realizes that he will never be the King that Duncan was, he can see that the honor he receives is merely from the mouth and not from the heart. To show the different views from each scene I would present them similar to each other, as this would allow the audience to compare and make a connection between the scenes more clearly. In act 1 scene 4 I would arrange the characters in order to show their status. I would place Duncan in center stage and make sure that he is the main focus. In order to enhance this idea his position on stage must be raised above others. I would have his loyal accompanists by his side. By doing this it would create the sense that Duncan is a man of high status and respected and honored as a King. To create a connection between the two scenes I would place Macbeth in the same position as Duncan in act 5 scene 3. Duncans reaction to the betrayal and sentenced execution to the once loyal Thane of Cawdor should be very calm. He could also show a slight sadness by shedding a tear, this would show the audience that Duncan is shocked and upset by the acts of mistrust. Macbeth is faced with a similar situation in which could endanger his position as King, I would make him react violently and irritated. To create an obvious link between the tow scenes I would use a large throne as a distinctive prop. This throne would be grand and covered in red velvet. In act 1 scene 4 I would have Duncan using this throne in a proper manner, sitting up straight and proudly, where as I would have Macbeth slouching with one leg on an armrest. By using this prop it would display their differences in Kingship. In act 1 scene 4 Macbeth displays his loyalty towards Duncan by crying out O worthiest cousin! as Macbeth and Banquo approach. As he says this line I would make him have his arms wide open reaching out towards Macbeth. In line 31 Duncan says let me infold thee and hold thee to my heart. On this line I would make Macbeth kneel down and kiss Duncans ring. Rings were worn by Kings as symbols of their positions. Kissing this ring would show Macbeths respect towards Duncan. In part 3 of act 5, line 11, a servant informs Macbeth about the English armys approach towards the castle. Macbeth is worried, he shows great disrespect towards the servant by addressing to him with thou cream-facd loon. Whilst Macbeth says this line I would make him use violence towards the servant, hitting or shaking him. This would show an evil and uncaring King that is simply using his status to place himself above everyone else. Towards the end of this scene a doctor talks to Macbeth about the condition of his wife. Macbeth looks down to the doctor even though the doctor knows more about his wife than he does. Macbeth often reassures himself by referring back to the witches prophecies, while he does this I would have him pacing back and forth. The witches never told Macbeth what to do; they simply predicted the future and left it in the hands of Macbeth. This raises the idea that Macbeth might not have been King if he did not kill Duncan, or he could have become King at a later date from the natural death of Duncan. Dressing both of the Kings in each scene differently can compare their differences in personality. I would dress Duncan in a large pure white robe to show his clear conscience. I would also adorn him with gold jewelry to display his high status. Macbeth would be dressed very differently; I would have him in more common clothing in the colour black. This black would show the evil hidden within him. This evil side is suggested when Lady Macbeth describes Macbeth as looking like the innocent yet being the serpent under. By using different lighting I would be able to display what the Kings are feeling in each scene. In act 1 scene 4 I would use an orange light, this would create a feeling of warmth, as Duncan is kind, caring and in great company. In act 5 scene 3 I would have a blue light, this will give the scene a cold, empty and negative feel. All of these stage techniques would enable the audience to compare and contrast the two scenes of Kingship. If these were not used it would make the story harder to understand, hidden within Shakespeares script. In both of these scenes the Kings received high amounts of respect whether it was truly from the heart or falsely from the mouth. Macbeth was seen to be simply an unfit King by those who knew him closely as apposed to a bad King. Their hosting of the 2006 Asian Games as well as the 2011 Asian Cup proved to legitimize their capabilities of hosting the tournament. Further, its superior financial capabilities were evident in their proposals for new stadia and infrastructure. While the decision on 2 December 2010 brought delight to Qatar, it inversely brought concern and controversy in the West. A number of rival candidates, western groups and media outlets have expressed concern over the suitability of Qatar to host the event, with regard to climatic conditions, interpretations of human rights, press freedom and allegations of corruption. Climate: Winter World Cup? The World Cup is traditionally held in the northern hemisphere’s summer. During this season in Qatar, the temperature can get to 50  °C  (122  Ã‚ °F). The Qatar bid’s chief executive, Hassan al-Thawadi has attempted to quell fears of an unbearable environment by stating â€Å"heat is not and will not be an issue† and that the 2022 World Cup would benefit from â€Å"state-of-the-art air cooling technologies. † The Qatar 2022 Bid’s official site explains this: â€Å"Each of the five stadiums will harness the power of the sun’s rays to provide a cool environment for players and fans by converting solar energy into electricity that will then be used to cool both fans and players at the stadiums. When games are not taking place, the solar installations at the stadia will export energy onto the power grid. During matches, the stadia will draw energy from the grid. This is the basis for the stadiums’ carbon-neutrality. Along with the stadiums, we plan to make the cooling technologies we’ve developed available to other countries in hot climates, so that they too can host major sporting events. † This method of cooling techniques is theoretically able to reduce temperatures from 50 to 27 degrees Celsius. The bidding committee also proposes to use such cooling technologies in fan-zones, training pitches and walkways between metro stations and stadiums. However, the architect in charge of one of the venues has abandoned their project claiming that a more old-fashioned solution would be cheaper and better. Leading firm Populous, which is designing the Sports City stadium in Doha, is trying to persuade Qatari organizers to scrap plans to have air conditioning at the venue. Populous director John Barrow said the system is too expensive and â€Å"notoriously unsustainable† for the environment when used on a large scale. Given the debate on the subject, a proposal of hosting a â€Å"Winter World Cup† has arisen. Backed by the likes of Blatter and Platini, the proposal suggests for the tournament to be held in January of 2022, rather than the summer. Blatter has told reporters â€Å"Personally, now that the decision has been taken [to have the tournament in Qatar], we must play at the most adequate period to have a successful World Cup and to have a successful World Cup we have to do it when it is best for the actors which means winter. † However, Mr. Blatter has failed to provide a solution on the effect it would have on European domestic leagues which operate in this period. There is nothing in FIFA’s rules to prevent a host changing the time of year when a World Cup is played. It is only tradition that dictates this. And the FIFA executive committee has the authority to change any aspect of the World Cup after the decision is made. Worker’s Conditions Given its lack of sporting infrastructure, the Gulf state must build nine football stadiums in the next ten years- and they’ll be using primarily migrant labor (over 90% of Qatar’s workforce is made up of foreign migrant workers). Trade union activists are now lobbying FIFA to highlight what they say are poor working conditions in Qatar. International trade unionists say FIFA has the power to impose decent working standards on Qatar and will campaign for the tournament to be moved unless FIFA presses for better conditions. If Qatar is unable to support the tournament on its own, Secretary-General Jerome Valcke has suggested the tournament be shared with neighboring states, such as Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates. Alcohol and Homosexuality Qatar is not a dry country. Alcohol can currently be consumed legally in a few clubs, bars, certain hotel restaurants, and the Pearl Island by showing your passport for reporting. Hassan Abdulla al Thawadi, chief executive of the Qatar 2022 World Cup bid, said the Muslim state would also permit alcohol consumption during the event. Specific fan-zones will be established where alcohol can be bought. Though legal with a permit, drinking in public is not permitted as Qatar's legal system is based on  Sharia  law. The selection of Qatar as hosts attracted controversy, as  homosexuality  is illegal in Qatar. FIFA President  Sepp Blatter  stated that â€Å"we (FIFA) don't want any discrimination. What we want to do is open this game to everybody, and to open it to all cultures, and this is what we are doing in 2022. Corruption: Bribery Scandal Six members of Fifa’s executive committee — a quarter of the membership – were accused by Lord Treisman (Chairman of England’s bid) of â€Å"improper and unethical behaviour† with two members, Issa Hayatou, of Cameroon, and Jacques Anouma, of Ivory Coast, alleged to received $1. 5 million each in bribes from the Qatar 2022 bid in exchange for their votes. The bribery allegations against Qatar were made in evidence from  The Sunday Times  and published by the committee. As a result, in November 2010, two ExCo members,  Reynald Temarii  and  Amos Adamu, were banned for one and three years respectively. Temarii was also fined 5,000 Swiss Francs, while Adamu was fined 10,000 Swiss Francs. More corruption allegations emerged in the summer of 2011. In May, ExCo member Chuck Blazer claimed fellow members Mohammed Bin Hammam and Jack Warner offered bribes for votes in the upcoming presidential election. As a result of this scandal, Bin Hammam stood down from the June 2011 presidential election and FIFA later suspended both he and Jack Warner. Sepp Blatter stood unopposed and won the election with 186 out of 203 votes. Bin Hammam’s suspension had been met with widespread anger in the Middle East- He was subsequently banned for life in July. Warner responded to his suspension by exposing an email by Valcke in which the Secretary-General suggested Qatar had â€Å"bought† the right to host 2022 tournament. Valcke defended his statement, insisting he was referring to Qatar using financial muscle to lobby legitimately for votes. â€Å"They were a candidate with a very important budget and used it to heavily promote their bid all around the world in a very efficient manner,† he said. â€Å"I have made no reference to any purchase of votes or similar unethical behaviour. Qatar 2022's bid team said they â€Å"categorically deny† any wrongdoing, and asked for clarification from FIFA on the meaning of the Valcke e-mail. Nevertheless, the scandal has raised concerns over $10 billion of investment and development contracts related to stadiums and hotels for the World Cup in Qatar. Possibility of a Re-Vote Given the developments in corruption and bribery scandals, as well as questions concerning the Qatar’s capabilities of hosting the tournament effectively, there is a ground swell of popular support to re-hold the 2022 vote won by Qatar. It was during my school when I realized that my English language teacher was far from ordinary ones, she was a real talent, a person who does not only teach, but a person who explains all the nuts and bolts of the language. First and foremost, she gave me a very strong background, based on grammar and lexicology; and later her main goal was to teach me how to ‘feel’ the language – intonation, emphasis and subtext. Due to her methodology I have become a person I am now with a strong desire to teach. Moreover, she taught me that it is essential to ‘dive’ into what you are doing to be able to reach success in the learning process. My devotion to the profession I have chosen started at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece where I studied Sciences of Education from September 2004 until June 2008. Even though the university has given me deep theoretical knowledge, I realized that unless I start practicing I will not be able to upgrade my skills. That was the very reason why during the last 2 years I was working as a teacher at a primary school. Needless to say, that very experience not only gave me a brilliant opportunity to gain more skills and knowledge, but it also gave me unbelievable satisfaction of what I was doing. At the same time, being a ‘top dog’ I have always been very critical to my accomplishments. I do realize that I lack experience and technical skills what actually prevents me from reaching tangible results. That is the very reason why I would like to apply for the Education Management programme. First and foremost, I would like to learn how to manage the classroom better – it is common knowledge that each and every child is a completely unique individual and requires corresponding approach. That is why it is very important to be able to gain respect and support of the classroom; otherwise a teacher will not be able to succeed. Both Mariam and Laila have endured so much heartache partially because they are women, but yet have managed to have pull together the strength to persevere. To persevere is to maintain a purpose in spite of difficulty, obstacles, or discouragement and continue consistently *make this the introduction scentence). Even though Mariam and Laila are years apart by age, and come from two different life styles, they are both forced to marry Rasheed , an older man who they dont(do not) know, in order to make a living for themselves. Mariam and Laila eventually learn to cooperate as they undergo Rasheeds emotional and physical abuse, and the rules set out for women in Afghanistan. Hosseini demonstrates through the perseverance of Mariam and Laila, how the inner strength of Afghan women allows them to endure difficult situations including forced marriages, lack of educational opportunities and Taliban restrictions. Marriage is the union of two people who love each other and wish to be in a committed partnership with one another. Marriage should not be forced on anyone who does not wish to be in a marriage (does not wish it), however; the women in the book, Mariam and Laila are both married off at a very young age to the same man, who is twice their age. In Mariams case, she was a burden to her family and so they just took the first offer for her. Rasheed is here, in Heart (Herat); he has come all the way from Kabul. The nikka will be tomorrow morning, and then there is a bus leaving for Kabul at noon (Hosseini 49). Mariam was not even consulted in whether or not she wanted to marry Rasheed, let alone she had never seen or met him before (not important). The other woman in the book, Laila, had no choice but to marry Rasheed. Laila had no body left to take care for her, all her friends and family had died or moved because of war. She had to think of her baby and to avoid the shame of being an unwed mother. Laila agreed to marry Rasheed, who was eager to have a young and attractive second wife. I am too old. Too old for you to do this to me. For you after all these years, to make me an ambagh(Hosseini 215). This was heart breaking for Mariam, for her husband to marry another woman, after she had spent her youth trying to be a good wife to him. I wouldnt have fed you and washed you and nursed you if Id known you were going to turn around and steal my husband (Hosseini 226). Mariam feels Laila is stealing her husband; she is upset and jealous of the new bride. Rasheed went as far as selling of his first wedding ring for a new and more expensive ring for Laila. Mariam and Laila are equally in the same situation in regards to being in a marriage with a man they both dont love, however However through the difficult condition they face on a daily basis from their abusive husband Rasheed. they overcome obstacles each day as their inner strength begins to grow and realize they deserve a better life, . nd With the support of one another, both women learn to persevere Rasheeds mistreatment and find a way to get out in the end even if its means to sacrifice their own lives. Nana didnt let Mariam do anything because she was worried that she would lose her. Whats the sense schooling a girl like you? Its like shining a spittoon. And youll learn nothing of value in those schools (Hosseini 18). Mariam wanted to learn but Nana refused to give her an education; therefore, when Nana died, Mariam had no choice but to marry Rasheed. Laila on the other hand had a fairly normal more stable background and an encouraging father. I know youre still young, but I want you to understand and learn this now. Marriage can wait, education cannot. Youre a very, very bright girl (Hosseini 114). Lailas father believed in her and allowed her to continue her education, which allowed Laila to gain the confidence to stand up to her future husband, Rasheed. Its a good time to be a woman in Afghanistan. And you can take advantage of that Laila (Hosseini 121). (remove quote). Women in general were evolving in Afghanistan and, with education theyd finally rise but sadly unfortunately the Taliban and the opinions of some men have ruined the opportunity for education for the women of Afghanistan to . After the eath of Lailas parents, she had no better choice but to get married, leaving behind her bright future. If it wasnt for war and the political oppression going on in Afghanistan Laila could have done so much more with continued her education. Nonetheless, Laila does not allow the lack of education opportunities bring her down,. Instead she has a goal of making she makes it a goal Afghanistan a better place for women to live in, as wel l as having the determination to not let anything or anyone bring her down and continue to be the strong woman she always has been. The Taliban take over was a huge step back for Afghanistan and its blossoming age for women. At first, it was believed the Taliban were saviors for the Afghan people, a lot of people assumed they would solve the problem, people like Rasheed, Let them come, I, for one, will shower them with rose petals (Hosseini 275). The people had no idea what the Taliban were doing;, they fully supported it, till untill they the Taliban started to impose laws. Most of these laws were strictly towards women. You will stay inside your homes at all times. It is not proper for women to wander aimlessly about the streets. If you go outside, you must be accompanied by a mahram, a male relative. If you are caught alone on the street, you will be beaten and sent home (Hosseini 278). The laws imposed by the Taliban basically treats women like dogs and like dogs, women were not allowed to leave their homes to go for a walk without a male escort.. Laila was beaten on several occasions by the Taliban every week when she would go see her daughter, Aziza, at the orphanage because Rasheed refused to take her. Mariam had heard the announcement, in January of that year that men and women would be seen in different hospitals, that all females would be discharged from Kabuls hospitals and sent to work in one central faculty (Hosseini 284). The Taliban went as far as forcing women to one central hospital with limited doctors and supplies, which made child birth for many women to be a terrifying situation. Laila suffered an awful child birth environmen t; she had to get a casesarian without any anesthetics (sounds better than drugs). The Taliban ways were laws were cruel to women which led to the death of many afghan women. Mariam was stoned to death by the Taliban for killing her husband Rasheed. Mariam and Laila being begin to realize they are stronger than they ever gave themselves credit for thought, and even though they both were aware of the consequences it was important for both women to finally be free, and fight for their freedom fight for their freedom. Mariam who always feared Rasheed has found the strength within her herself to finally set herself as well as Lailas life free. Mariam overcame her fear, and although she was aware of the fact that she was to die, she knew that she finally persevered. Misogyny is the hatred, dislike or distrust of women. Afghanistan is a very misogynistic country, mainly because of the mentality of most men being influenced by the Taliban who are a Muslim fundamentalists group. A Thousand Splendid Suns shows the struggles that women such as Mariam and Laila go through on a daily basis. The laws imposed by the Taliban basically treats women like dogs and like dogs, women were not allowed to leave their homes to go for a walk without a male escort (add this example in conclusion instead of the third paragraph). A woman, presumably his wife, is in the kitchen preparing dinner when there is a knock at the door. The man answers the door and is immediately assaulted with a baseball bat. He is then tied up and stabbed with a knife. Bound on the floor, he watches one of the two assailants beat and rape his wife. His daughter who is watching from the other room is carried off by one of the assailants. The movie fades to black as if the man has lost consciousness. The next scene is of two men discussing their careers and ambitions. From the conversation, we are led to believe they are lawyers which is confirmed when we see a team of them discussing cases, research, and deciding who will try which cases. Nick, one of the duo we were introduced to earlier, is summoned by the DA (Cantrell) who wants information about the Shelton case. This is a legal principle which holds that evidence collected or analyzed in violation of the defendants constitutional rights is sometimes inadmissible. The forensic evidence including the blood found on a shirt is deemed inconclusive. Clyde is told that even though he witnessed the assault, his testimony will not be reliable because he blacked out. After arguing with the attorney, Clyde is told â€Å"It’s not what you know it’s what you can prove in court. † Upon seeing the growing horror and desperation on Clyde’s face we are left feeling dissatisfied with the justice system and the loopholes that are sometimes present within it. We leave the husband and move into a courtroom where the deal is struck. Here we see that Nick, as the prosecuting attorney, does not like the way this case has turned out. This is especially evident when Nick tells Darby to please mess this up so he can destroy him. As Nick is leaving the courthouse with Cantrell he questions his judgment before talking to the gathered press. During the talk with the press Darby, the man who agreed to testify, shakes his hand and thanks him for being in his corner. Nick quietly tells him to get away from him and notices the husband staring at him. Nick then heads home to his wife and unborn child. Its been 10 years and Ames is being prepared for lethal injection. Nick and some of his fellow attorneys are present for the execution. Ames’ last statement is that he didn’t kill those people and that the wrong man is dying there today. As we are watching the injection it appears that something has gone horribly wrong, Ames starts convulsing and screaming. There are veins visible all over his body. Outside while trying to figure out if the machine is corrupted or has been tampered with, Nick is presented with a bottle that was found taped behind the machine. The bottle has can’t fight fate scratched into the front. Clarence Darby was heard saying this phrase multiple times during his time with the police. Darby receives an anonymous phone call and is told to look out of the south side window of his apartment where he see’s approaching police cars. He runs out of his apartment and fires a gun at the police cars before fleeing onto a rooftop. His mysterious caller calls back and directs him to a police car where the officer has been rendered unconscious. At gunpoint Darby forces the officer to drive. They arrive at an abandoned warehouse under an old bridge where we discover the cop is really a disguised Clyde. He uses a toxin to paralyze Darby and tells him he will still be able to feel everything. Darby is taken into a warehouse and hooked up to a table with saline and adrenaline. Clyde points out various tools and proceeds to describe to him the torture that he is about to go through. We then see him start up a video recorder and use an electric saw to cut off Darby’s legs. After the discovery of Darby’s body the police look for possible motives and discover that Clyde Shelton owns the warehouse where Darby’s body was found. When the police come to arrest Clyde he is standing in the doorway wearing only a bracelet that says daddy. Clyde is taken into custody and escorted to a cell where he is questioned . In the meantime a package arrives at Nick’s house and is opened by his daughter, it contains a video of Darby’s execution. Nick, thinking this is an open and shut case, walks in and congratulates Clyde off the record and tells him that the world is a better place without people like Darby and Ames. On the record he asks Clyde if he’s sure he wants to waive his right to counsel, then proceeds to question him about the murders. He asks if Clyde murdered Clarence Darby and is answered that he wanted him dead, he killed his wife and child. He asks about Rupert Ames and is told that Rupert Ames deserved to die. That they both deserved to die. Nick then asks if Clyde arranged both of the murders and is told that he planned it in his head, over and over again. That it took him a long time. Nick thanks Clyde and starts to walk away when he is told to cancel his 12:30 lunch with Judge Roberts. To go ahead and cancel the rest of his week. He then has his words thrown in his face†¦. it’s not what you know its what you can prove in court. That he has not said anything that could incriminate him in a court of law. What father wouldn’t want those things to happen. Clyde then states he wants to make a deal. He tells them if they get him a nice bed then they will get his full confession. At the sentencing trial the DA’s office asks the judge to hold Mr. Shelton without bail. Clyde tells the judge that he finds it highly prejudicial, even constitutionally offensive to keep him detained without bail and he proceeds to point out a case Day v. McDonough, docket #041325 to make his point. When the judge agrees with him he begins to mock her, stating that he can’t believe she was about to let him go considering that he allegedly just killed two people. He states that he fed her a couple of legal precedents and she jumped right on it. That she treats the law like its an assembly line and does she have any idea what justice is. He then asks her repeatedly whatever happened to right and wrong. Back in the cell Clyde proceeds to give Nick a detailed confession just as he promised and admits that he has another confession, thus he wants another deal. This time he wants a steak dinner from Del Frisco’s restaurant and he wants his iPod. This is all in return for the life of Bill Reynolds, Darby’s attorney. He tells them to make sure his meal is there by 1:00 pm and he will give them Mr. Reynolds location. The warden aggravated by his demands delays the meal. This delays the search effort and results in the discovery of Mr. Reynolds body. He was hooked up to an oxygen mask that was scheduled to quit working at 1:15pm, if they hadn’t been delayed he would have been alive when they got there. While this is happening Clyde uses the bone from the steak to murder his cell-mate. The warden has him moved to solitary confinement The DA pulls some strings and finds a man that knew Clyde in the past. They find out that he is what they call a brain, someone who can kill people without being in the same room with them. That he has a gift for it and he is the best. They are told that if Clyde is in jail it’s because he wants to be there. That he’s a born tactician and every move he makes means something. They are advised by their contact to walk into the cell and put a bullet into his head because they won’t be able to stop him otherwise. We then see Nick and Cantrell talking to Judge Burch. They ask her to wrap Clyde up in legal tape to limit contact and access to the outside world. She then asks them if they want her to violate his god given civil rights in the name of some murky sense of the greater good. After given a yes, she says she‘s game. She warns them it won’t stick for long. After she hands over the signed paper, her cell phone rings. When she answers her head explodes and she falls over dead. It’s unclear if the phone exploded or she was shot. Clyde while being questioned by Nick over the death of the judge states that he is at war with the broken thing that brought them together, referring to the justice system. Clyde then tells him he has another deal release him and drop all charges by 6am or he kills everyone. As 6am rolls around the legal team anxiously await’s the next call for another victim. Everyone releases a breath when nothing happens at 6 am. As they get into their vehicles preparing to leave there are several explosions and we get a close-up of one of the lawyers face before her car explodes. The lawyers are assigned a security detail and their families are evacuated. They suspect he has an accomplice but struggle to find any connection to anyone. Clyde warns the lawyers that he is just warming up, and that he is going to bring the whole diseased temple down on their heads. One by one all of the lawyers start questioning whether they are responsible for all of these innocent lives lost because they did not proceed with a trial for mr. Shelton’s family. The next casualty is Jonas Cantrell when his vehicle is gunned down and then blown up by an automated machine after the funeral of their colleague. After this many deaths the city is put on lockdown. After a tip and cross referencing the buildings sold in the area in the last ten years, they find out that clyde owns the building across from the jail. While investigating the building they discover a tunnel that leads directly to the jail. Clyde has been coming and going as he chooses. Posing as a janitor, Clyde infiltrates city hall and plants a bomb directly below the room holding a meeting of the fbi, homeland security, the sherrifs department, the philly police department and the mayor. The movie comes to a conclusion when Nick corners clyde in solitary and asks him to stop what he’s doing. Clyde is holding a cell phone in his hand one call and the bomb that he has set up will explode. Nick tells him that it is a decision he will have to live with for the rest of his life. Clyde says he’s sorry and calls the number. Nick shuts the door and runs out of the building, we then hear ringing. They have moved the bomb to Clyde’s cell and handcuffed it to his bed. Clyde sits on his bed and stares at the bracelet his daughter made for him while flames crawl up the wall behind him. We see Nick walk across the parking lot as part of the building explodes. This movie shows us the downside of the justice system and all of the things that can go wrong if proper protocol is not followed. It focuses on some of the issues that the law enforcement community faces when trying to put violent offenders behind bars. In protecting everyone’s civil rights, sometimes the bad guys don’t get the justice that is deserved. Increasingly criminals are using these loopholes to get reduced sentences that may help put them back on the street sooner. As part of the law enforcement community we should strive to make sure that things like this rarely happen. If a person commit’s a crime they should be punished accordingly. It is a harsh reality that criminals must be proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. I have to agree with Nick in these instances it’s not what you know, it’s what you can prove in court. That must be one of the most frustrating things to deal with. Another issue that I noticed in the movie was the blatant abuse of power. For instance, in the scene where the DA’s are talking to the judge they ask her to wrap Clyde up in legal precedents to restrict his access to the outside world.
